Bayou Terrebonne Coastal Mitigation Area
Terrebonne Parish
Bayou Terrebonne Map
Bayou Terrebonne Coastal Mitigation Bank is located within Terrebonne Parish approximately two and a half miles southeast of Montegut, Louisiana. The site is adjacent to the Bayou la Cache Wetlands Mitigation Area. The project is located within the Louisiana Coastal Conservation Boundary.
The Bank intends to serve as a mitigation area offering for sale restoration credits as compensation for unavoidable impacts to wetlands associated with Coastal Use Permits (CUP) and permits issues by the New Orleans District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the West Central Louisiana Coastal Watershed for:
Fresh Marsh
Baldcypress-Tupelo Swamp
Bottomland Hardwood
This project will primarily serve the Central Louisiana Coastal Watershed which includes Ascension, Assumption, Iberia, Iberville, LaFourche, St. Martin, St. Mary & Terrebonne Parishes.
Bank: Bayou Terrebonne Coastal Mitigation Bank
Location: Terrebonne Parish
Service Area: HUC 08090302
Project Size: 74 Acres in Phase I
RIBITS: Bank In Process
Prior land use for the project area was active cattle pasture.
The Terrebonne Basin is an important estuarine system supporting many ecological and economic functions and values. Recent threats to this area include land loss due to subsidence, erosion, land use change and saltwater intrusion. The Bank will restore hydrology and reintroduce native Bottomland Hardwood and Baldcypress-Tupelo stands and Freshwater Marsh vegetation to create and maintain wetland functions and values associated with these habitat types.
The coastal wetlands will benefit by adding high quality coastal habitat in an area without contributing to a net loss of wetlands in an area that is currently losing wetlands at a rate of 3.9 square miles per year. The surface hydrology restoration, removal of livestock and reestablishment of marsh and forest vegetation will result improved water quality through a reduction in non-point source runoff. The restored marsh will provide enhanced habitat for fish and wildlife such as migratory and resident birds; alligators and fur-bearing mammals; and both game and nongame species.
